These lenses are built keeping in mind the motion picture requirement. Not just focusing on super sharp images, it has tried to build lens which cinematographers would like to use with digital sensors. Leitz’s team claim that the images are clearer without making it overly sharp. The skin tones are very natural with accurate colors. 15 blades form the iris of each lens creates space throughout the complete range of stops. It makes the subject more live while allowing other elements to support the structure giving more dimension for the image. The covering circle size of the lenses is compact and light with a diameter of 95mm and weighing between 1.06-1.6kg.

Thalia is a response for large format prime lenses. The focal length of lenses includes 24, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70, 100, 120 and 180mm. These lenses are available in PL mount. They maintain 95mm front diameter and iris ring locations for consistency. The highlight of thalia lenses is its iris design which has a circular shape throughout the aperture. The bokeh is smooth which helps the elements that are out of focus to maintain structure and shape.

The history

Fujifilm has been instrumental from the day of its inception in 1934. It has been a pioneer in photographic and motion picture films. From year 2000 Fujifilm started to make their mark by developing lenses for cinema. They were and still are very popular in film, television and commercial production industry for their contribution to great quality. The company also received an Emmy Award by American Academy of Arts and Sciences for their contribution in year 2017.

The growth in zoom cinema large lenses

There are many options in the market for cinema zoom lenses. Fujifilm developed the “Fujinon Premista” series which falls under the cinema zoom lenses category. The series has primarily two lenses:

  • Fujinon Premista 28-100mm T2.9
  • Fujinon Premista 80-250mm 9-T3.5

Zeiss has also been into this category like other lens makers and have been dedicated to work towards better zoom cinema lenses. The new Premista series will foil the existing series and address the diversified requirement of cinema production.

As stated by FUJIFILM: “For 17 years, Fujifilm has been making high-quality Cine optics for Super-35 sensor cameras in the very successful FUJINON Premier, Cabrio and MK ranges of lenses. More recently, many cinema digital camera manufacturers have launched cameras equipped with large format sensors*1 to give cinematographers a different format to help them bring their cinematic vision to the screen. Consequently, there is now demand for zoom lenses that not only cover the image circle of the new sensors, but that also provide high optical performance and versatility”.

The Fujinon Premista lenses series can help bring maximum output of large sensors which are trending in cinema industry so that high quality video can be produced. It supports HDR with rich graduation and rich resolution. In Bollywood there is good demand of Fujinon cine lenses which are capable to delivery HDR quality since many of them have now started to use large sensors. High performance Fujinon 4k cine zoom lenses can help to shoot wide scenes with excellent operational ability.

Premista lenses offers great quality with its large aspherical lens and newly innovated focus and zoom system that allows superb edge to edge resolution. 13-blade design and low depth of field enables to beautifully and faithfully capture the subject.  The unique optical design helps to reduce flares which helps to create rich gradation.

To protect ourselves and the loved ones in this pandemic, keeping everything clean and hygienic is the most essential thing. So if you are the one who is always behind the camera make sure you are disinfecting your camera and equipment regularly.

Some reports suggest that the corona virus can remain active for couple of hours on the surfaces that it has come contact with. Government institutions has cautioned people to clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces like switches, phones, tables, door handles etc.

Why disinfect your camera

We use camera by bringing it close to human body many times. It can potentially be a transmission source for virus. Even camera bags and other gears can be dangerous during such times. So keeping your camera and other gears clean is very important to reduce the risk of getting corona virus. Try to use your live screen more during this time.

Disinfect your cameras and gears even during normal days. So use your self isolation time to clean and make your time productive.

Here is how you can do it

  1. Wipe the body of your camera. Rub it with soft material to start with. You may use some denatured alcohol and a soft brush to get rid of stains. Be mindful of the surfaces that have leather as alcohol can remove the glue. Make sure the handgrip and back side of camera is cleaned properly as these sides are exposed to human contact more.
  2. Once you have cleaned the body, here is how to clean camera lens and the sensor. These are very sensitive so be extra careful. You will need a dust blower, lint free wipes and a lens cleaner. Be extra cautious while cleaning camera lens with alcohol.

The use of disinfectants

  1. The basic: Soap and Water

You may clean the grips and bags with normal soap water. It is effective in fighting the virus. So using soap water is just as effective as using Lysol wipes.

  1. Alcohol

Alcohols with proportions of more than 60% also works best to clean surfaces. The hand sanitizer that we all use is basically isopropyl alcohol. It is slightly less effective to soap but if you let it dry quick before you touch any surface, it works well. You can make a sanitizer by yourself by mixing 99% isopropyl alcohol with 1 portion of skin cream and mix it thoroughly.

All the camera lovers can use alcohol wipes as a best way to clean camera lens and also to clean and care for your camera gear as an additional measure and help fight the spread of this pandemic. The important thing is to stay away from crowds. Try to improvise on your skills during the lockdown.

Lenses play a vital role in establishing the theme, mood and the larger vision for films. They also offer more freedom for directors to capture small nuances of life and transfer them to film. For example, macro lenses can help capture rings on water with ultra-miniscule clarity that can take the audience right into a picturesque scene.

If you’re a filmmaker (amateur or professional), chances are that you’re probably already aware of this. And perhaps the high price of some lenses is holding you back from exploring their features for yourself. If this is the case, you should know that despite the high costs, your initial investment can pay off in unexpected – and handsome – ways.

If lens quality is the most important aspect to you as a filmmaker, consider investing in Leica cine lenses for your next celluloid project. The German parent company of these lenses, Leica, received the honorary Academy Scientific and Engineering award for the mechanical and optical design of its lenses in 2015, so you know that you’re getting a world-class product when you purchase Leica cine lenses.

Cine lenses come in various types and configurations. Here are 3 important factors to consider before purchasing your own:

Subject

The subject of the film is extremely important for choosing a lens. For creative cinematic work, prime lenses will provide the much needed quality. A pair of these can provide ideal control for setting the mood and theme with focus and exposure. The downside of these is that these lenses are often relatively expensive. If you are working towards capturing a real event, zoom lenses are ideal.  Ultra wide zoom lenses can be expensive too but they offer a close range exposure that can take your scene from ho-hum to wow.

Focus

Depending on the type of film, filmmakers can select an autofocus lens or a manual lens. Some professional filmmakers work with a manual focus, which provides them the freedom to shoot with exact precision and in accordance with their vision. When selecting a lens with a manual focus, quality must an important factor for consideration in order to control the outcome of their filmmaking project.

Focal Length

Purchasing the right lens can be a challenge for a new filmmaker. Understanding the purpose of different lenses with various focal lengths can be a good starting point. Widely popular lenses like Fisheye are ideal for covering cityscapes, panoramic shots and landscapes. The focal length of these lenses is between 8-24 mm. Lenses between 24-35 mm, the wide angle lenses are ideal for capturing architectural details. If you are interested in capturing wildlife or sports or are looking for a lens specific to a scientific pursuit like Astronomy, consider using a telephoto lens, which offers a focal length between 100-600mm.

So, are you ready to capture big dreams?!
